New Route to Miller Peak

New Route to Miller Peak

Video from the Top of Miller Peak

We went looking for a better route to the top of Miller peak. I in the past I have hiked Miller Peak from Lutz Canyon which is a toughie with little shade and no water.  Montezuma pass is another route which is long and hot.  I started the day off with a drive-up Carr canyon road which is a rough narrow high clearance road to its end at Ramsey Campground. The hike starts on the Carr peak trail #107  This route has the least amount of vertical climb, since you start out at about 7000 feet.  The problem is this is a long hike of about 9 miles round trip and you need to allow 10 hours for the hike.  The hike starts as an easy climb up to the ridge line and then into a series of switchbacks as things start to open up. When the trail opens up there are amazing views looking south toward Mexico and East towards Bisbee.  The unobstructed views of Carr canyon and the mule mountains are worth the hike.  The Carr Peak trail in the Fall has great colors as the Aspens tree turns bright yellow.  The trail sign says Carr peak is 2 and ¾ quarters mile.  It is 2 and one-quarter to the Carr peak Spur trail The Carr Peak Trail keeps going past the Carr peak spur.  There upon after a half mile, junctions with the Crest Trail which takes you to Miller Peak spur trail at bathtub springs.  The Trail is mostly flat as you circle around bowl at the top of Miller Canyon. You are now looking at Miller peak and it is off to Bathtub springs.  Bathtub springs is a reliable water source and is an actual bathtub someone long ago brought up to the foot of Miller Peak.   You intersect the Miller Canyon trail here and climb your way up to Miller Peak.  From here you hike up the ridge toward the Miller Peak spur trail.   The ridge offers some good campsites and a great view of the south.  Once at the Miller peak spur trail you start your assent to the top.  There is a good view of the ridge you just hike with its beautiful aspen quakes and Carr Peak in all its majesty.  After a steep climb you are on top of the Huachuca range and have conquered Miller peak 9470 ft.  In conclusion, this is a great hike, but allow at least 10 hours of time for this hike and the return.    Equally important is to have 3 liters of water with you.  I hope you will enjoy this hike.
